Unathi Sibiya, a 23-year-old finalist in the Mr Deaf South Africa competition, hails from Chiawello, Soweto in Johannesburg. Born in Umzimkulu, KZN, Unathi is the youngest of three, with a supportive family who encouraged him to pursue his dreams. Growing up in Joburg, he attended Sizwile School for the Deaf before studying at NID College and landing a job at TGF, a manufacturing company.
Inspired by the current Mr Deaf South Africa, Unathi aims to use his platform to raise awareness about the Deaf community's capabilities and struggles. Facing challenges of convincing others about the importance of representation, he remains determined to shatter stereotypes through his participation in the competition.
With a passion for construction, Unathi hopes to further his studies in the future and advocate for sign language education in essential institutions. Through his journey, he hopes to inspire others, break barriers, and pave the way for a more inclusive society. Unathi's achievements include obtaining his driver's license and becoming a finalist in the competition. His ultimate goal is to make a lasting impact and empower the Deaf community in South Africa.
