The music industry has long been a male-dominated space, presenting significant challenges for female artists, songwriters, and producers vying for success. This narrative, however, is shifting. Women such as Taylor Swift, Adele, Billie Eilish, Alicia Keys, and Beyoncé have churned out chart-topping hits, breaking barriers and providing a voice for their female counterparts. Their journeys serve as inspiration for many, and this momentum is particularly palpable in South Africa, a country rich with musical heritage shaped by iconic female artists like Miriam Makeba, Brenda Fassie, and Zahara.

At the forefront of this movement is Sheer Publishing Africa, the continent's leading independent music publisher. The organization has recently taken substantial strides to support and elevate a fresh wave of female talent in the industry. One of their most commendable actions was sponsoring the ‘Songwriter of The Year’ award at the 2024 Basadi in Music Awards, held at the Joburg Theatre in Braamfontein, Johannesburg on August 10.

Founded in 2022, the Basadi in Music Awards celebrate and honor the remarkable contributions of women across all genres within the South African music landscape. The awards ceremony recognizes singers, rappers, DJs, composers, producers, and other creatives, all while uplifting and showcasing the immense talent available when women are given the spotlight they deserve.

This year, Afro soul artist Brenda Mtambo received the ‘Songwriter of The Year’ award for her song “Bhaluyacima.” Overflowing with gratitude, Brenda took to social media to express her heartfelt thanks: "I’ve always said I’m first a writer before I’m a singer... Writing music has healed me in so many ways. Thank you for journeying with me." Mtambo’s dedication of her award to her late grandmother encapsulates the emotional depth behind her artistry and the personal stories that fuel her creative journey.

These accolades spotlight the growing recognition of female talent in a traditionally male-centric industry.

Thando Makhunga, Managing Director of Sheer Publishing Africa, expressed pride in the accomplishments of female artists, stating, “At Sheer Publishing, we are proud to support and celebrate the achievements of women who are not only shaping the future of African music but also paving the way for the next generation of artists.”
